ひな祭りを英語で説明してみよう

本日3月3日は桃の節句の日ですね！では、さっそく英語で説明してみましょう！

Hinamatsuri, also known as the Doll Festival or Girls’ Festival, is a traditional Japanese event celebrating the health and happiness of girls. It takes place annually on March 3rd and is also called “Momo-no-Sekku.”

ひな祭りは、女の子の健やかな成長と幸せを願う日本の伝統的な行事です。毎年3月3日に行われ、「桃の節句」とも呼ばれます。

The origin of Hinamatsuri traces back to the “Joushi-no-Sekku” (Upper Serpent Day) in ancient China. During Joushi-no-Sekku, people purified themselves in rivers and performed rituals to ward off evil. This custom was introduced to Japan, and during the Heian period, a doll-playing activity called “Hiina asobi” became popular among noblewomen.

ひな祭りの起源は、古代中国の「上巳（じょうし）の節句」に遡ります。上巳の節句では、人々は川で身を清め、厄払いの儀式を行っていました。この風習が日本に伝わり、平安時代には貴族の子女の間で「ひいな遊び」と呼ばれる人形遊びが流行しました。

There was an interesting tradition called “Nagasu-bina,” where people would transfer their troubles on paper dolls and then send them down rivers as a way to let go of their misfortunes. Over time, this practice combined with other customs, and by the Edo period, it evolved into what we now know as Hinamatsuri, or Doll’s Day, which includes displaying decorative hina dolls.

また、紙で作った人形に自分の厄を移して川に流す「流し雛」という風習もありました。これらの風習が結びつき、江戸時代になると、現在のようなひな人形を飾るひな祭りの形が確立しました。

Hina dolls are believed to take on misfortunes in place of girls. The display centers around a pair of dolls called Dairibina (emperor and empress), accompanied by three court ladies (Sannin kanjo), five musicians (Gonin bayashi), and others.

ひな人形は、女の子の身代わりに災いを引き受けてくれるとされています。内裏雛（だいりびな）と呼ばれる男女一対のひな人形を中心に、三人官女、五人囃子などを飾ります。

Some popular dishes you might enjoy include chirashi sushi, which is a colorful bowl of sushi rice topped with various ingredients. There’s also clam soup, which is a comforting broth made with clams. You might like hina arare too, which are fun and colorful rice crackers, and hishimochi, special diamond-shaped rice cakes that are often eaten during celebrations.
