節分を英語で説明してみよう

今日は節分ですね！節分は2月3日で固定されているわけではなく、「立春の前日」という定義で、4年に一度2月2日になるそうです。

では、節分を英語で説明してみましょう！

Setsubun is a traditional Japanese event held on the day before the beginning of spring, where people perform rituals to ward off evil spirits and invite good fortune into their lives.

節分は立春の前日に行われる、邪気を払い、福を招き入れる伝統的な行事です。

It is believed that evil spirits are likely to enter at the change of seasons, so Setsubun is an event to drive them away.

季節の変わり目は邪気が入りやすいと考えられており、節分はその邪気を払うための行事です。

People throw roasted soybeans while shouting “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” (“Demons out! Luck in!”) to drive away evil spirits.

「鬼は外、福は内」と掛け声をかけながら、炒った大豆をまいて邪気を払います。

Eating a thick sushi roll (futomaki) in silence while facing the lucky direction (eho) of the year is believed to bring good luck.

その年の恵方（幸運を招く方角）を向いて、太巻きを丸ごと無言で食べると縁起が良いとされています。
